# Scopes and permissions

> Scopes let you control what your AI agents have access to do in Whirl. These are set when connecting to an MCP client on the consent screen.

## Scopes

| Scope | Allows |
| - | - |
| `workspace:read` | Read workspaces, members, statuses, tasks, activity, task runs and pending actions. |
| `workspace:write` | Update workspaces and tasks, and manage reminders. |
| `agents:read` | Read agents, instructions, handbook entries, knowledge sources, scheduled tasks and runs. |
| `agents:write` | Give agents tasks, send follow-ups, and edit instructions, knowledge and scheduled tasks. |
| `approvals:write` | Approve, reject or edit pending actions, complete human tasks and answer agent questions. |
| `offline_access` | Get refresh tokens. |

## Missing scopes

Calls without the required scope return HTTP status 403.

## Approvals

`approvals:write` is off by default on the consent screen, because approving an action can send messages or change other apps.
